2013 Hood Wrap-up

What a camp! With 11 stellar days on snow, the 2013 NYSEF Mount Hood camp is winding down. We worked the fundamentals of ski racing throughout the camp during 3 full days of free skiing, 4 days of each GS and SL focused free skiing/drills. Hiking, soccer, kickball, whitewater rafting, swimming, testing next year's ski equipment, the annual camp talent show... WOW, did camp fly by or what?!?

In GS, we worked on re-centering in transition and finding the new outside ski, trying to dial in consistency. We even got one day in custom built rollers on the Magic Mile (AWESOME TRAINING!). In SL, we tightened things up and worked on balance, quickness and turn-shape. Today, our final day on snow, we had a dual paneled SL in which everyone got to test the skills they learned improved upon.

 Dual SL

Current USST member (and NYSEF Alum) Tommy Biesemeyer stopped in for 6 days including our rafting day on the Deschutes River - what a blast it is to have Tommy with us both on and off snow. He headed out on Sunday night to Park City where he'll work on his strength and conditioning until the end of the month when he heads to New Zealand for more on snow training. We wish Tommy the best of luck this year!

Here's Tommy getting chased down a brush SL course!

Well, what a camp. Fun was had by all and lots of skills learned. For more pictures check us out on Facebook! Can't wait to see everyone again soon come the fall, fit and ready to ski!

Update from Hood

Greetings from a HOT Mount Hood...

Things have been going great here since our last post. We've now skied a total of 5 days and are into our GS block for the camp. We finished up our first 4 day block of free-skiing and fundamental drill work on Friday with a corridor of brushes. We progressed from working on basic balance and stance to moving towards the new outside ski with power and precision. Today we skied GS in rollers which challenged our skills by forcing us to execute clean turns in abrupt terrain. Progress (and FUN) was had by all!

The weather has changed for the better - we've had great visibility and snow over the last few days. The challenge has turned from trying to stay dry and warm to now trying to stay cool and find shade! The mountain is losing snow quickly but there is still PLENTY to go around! For dryland, we've spent some time exploring some new swimming holes and lakes to cool off in.

Our guest coach, Tommy Biesemeyer (current USST member, NYSEF alum) will be joining us for the remainder of the camp. We're excited to have Bies back at Hood and are looking forward to a great remainder of camp!

Here's a few pics of on snow - check out more on Facebook!
