Northwood School Alpine Ski Scholarship

NYSEF partner, Northwood School announces the creation of two Alpine Ski Racing Scholarships available for one male and one female boarding student for the 2014/2015 school year. Each ski scholarship is valued at $20,000, and is renewable each year based on the recipient’s academic and athletic performance along with good overall standing in school.
 
Northwood School is a co-educational, independent, boarding and day school serving students in grades nine through twelve. Since its founding in 1905 Northwood School has offered outstanding scholastic and athletic programs in the Adirondacks. The school allows alpine skiers the combination of rigorous academic preparation for competitive colleges in a supportive, structured, small class-setting along with first-rate training and coaching.

Longtime partners in attracting top level athletes to the area, NYSEF provides Northwood School with additional coaching support and equipment, hill and training space, as well as locker room and changing facilities at the NYSEF/Uihlein Training Center at Whiteface Mountain. New! January & February Winter Term Sessions Added

NYSEF is excited to announce the addition of three new terms to our program offerings this season. 

The NYSEFWinter Term Program will provide aspiring student-athletes in our development programs with the opportunity to pursue their athletics at an advanced level while continuing remotely in their school’s academic curricula. With coaching from NYSEF’s elite coaching staff and academic support from a team of experienced tutors, Winter Term athletes will be able to make huge gains on the hill while maintaining rigorous academic standards. 

In addition to the Full Winter Term (approx. 11.5 weeks, from January 2 to March 22), we’ve added three discipline-specific Winter Terms which will offer athletes significant additional on-snow training in the months leading up to key championship events.

The January Winter Term (4.5 weeks, from January 2 to February 2) will have an Alpine/Freeride focus, and will begin immediately following the Christmas break. A month of dedicated on-snow training in January will allow U14 and U16 athletes to prepare for priority qualifiers for post-season championship events including State/Regional Championships and beyond.

Two February Winter Terms will now be offered, both with a Nordic focus. A cross-country specific Winter Term will be offered from February 2-March 1, allowing Nordic skiers to maximize quality on-snow training and recovery time in preparation for the Junior National Championships, held from March 2-8 in Stowe, VT. The Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined Winter Term will run from January 27 to February 20, and will allow jumpers to double their amount of jumps before the Junior National Championships, held from February 22-25 in Anchorage, AK.

The NYSEF Winter Term Program will take advantage of the world-class facilities available at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid. Program enrollment includes access to the OTC gymnasium and weight room facility, conference rooms for academic sessions, as well as access to their full-service cafeteria and dormitory (for boarding students). NYSEF is proud of its close relationship with the Olympic Training Center and use of this resource allows Winter Term athletes to live and train in a world-class facility surrounded by international athletes making their final preparations for the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi.

Application deadlines will be November 15^th 2013 for terms starting in January and December 15^th 2013 for terms starting in late January or early February.

The 2013 NYSEF Eastern Fall Camp will be held this fall in late November at Mont Sainte-Anne, Quebec. This camp is open to any athlete (U12+) that wants to get a head start on the upcoming season, particularly for U12s and U14s.

• Why: a chance to check out this year’s gear, get sized by coaches, professional boot fitters and/or representatives from major ski companies like Head, Fischer, Rossignol, Dynastar, Lange, Volkl, Marker, Technica, Blizzard, Nordica, and more.
• When: Saturday, September 14th at the NYSEF Building at Whiteface from 9 am – 12 pm

Dryland to follow, bring workout clothes and water bottle!

Enrollment fees increase on September 16th so be sure to register ASAP. 

David McCahill - NYSEF Academic Coordinator

NYSEF is pleased to announce the addition of David McCahill to our winter staff. David will be serving as Academic Coordinator for this season’s Junior Development Winter Term Program.

A NYSEF alum and ’04 graduate of Northwood School, David competed as a Nordic Combined athlete and represented NYSEF at numerous Eastern Cup, National Championship and World Cup B events before eventually pursuing a degree in Environmental Science and German at Harvard University. While at Harvard, David was a four-year member of the school’s Division 1 cross-country ski team competing on the EISA circuit, and he co-captained the team his senior year. Following his graduation from Harvard, David returned to the Adirondacks to teach Math and Science at the National Sports Academy in Lake Placid and to coach Ski Jumping and Cross Country with NYSEF, during which time he was honored by the USSA as the 2010/11 Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined Domestic Coach of the Year. For the past two years, David has been living and working in western Austria teaching English at several high schools through a grant from the Austrian government and the Fulbright Commission.

David writes, “I’m elated to be back with NYSEF and to be involved with the Winter Term Program. As a believer in the student-athlete process, I know how important academic support and on-snow training are to the development of young athletes. The NYSEF Winter Term Program will allow them to stay on top of their coursework while making huge gains on the hill.”
