2013 NYSEF Mount Hood Camp

Hello from Mount Hood, Oregon!

The 2013 NYSEF Mount Hood Camp began this past Monday, June 24th, with a safe travel day with no incidents. We're off to a slow start so far, but things are looking up on the horizon.

Upon arriving in Government Camp on Monday afternoon, we quickly unpacked and grabbed dinner before our evening meeting at 7pm. This year, we switched up our housing a bit by putting our older veteran campers in a house down the street while our younger campers hold the fort down at the Huckleberry Inn. But Huck's will still be our place for meals and meetings.

The weather over the last few weeks has been quite wet and dreary and we've experienced the tail end of that weather yesterday and today. We skied yesterday during some rain showers and fog but it wasn't bad enough to keep us off the mountain. We spent time "getting our feet back" working on balance and stance right away - we got plenty of free skiing in amidst the soggy weather. After lunch, we did some dryland activities including a dynamic warm-up along with a run and stretch (still in the rain). Check out the photo of our crew waiting out a 5 minute downpour...

Today we had less luck with skiing; between mechanical issues with the lift and heavier rain and fog, we decided to sit it out and use our "rain day" for the camp. We took it easy this morning and headed down for an afternoon at the movies in Sandy. On the way back up to Govy, we stopped for a game of soccer in Welches after the rain stopped.  A great afternoon activity after being cooped up inside....

Looking ahead, the weather looks phenomenal for as far out as we can see. We're looking forward to day 2 on snow tomorrow - we'll be continuing to work on balance and stance in groups then moving on to other fundamental skills like edge control and turn-shape by Friday.

All for now, will check back in later... follow us (NYSEF Snowsports) on Facebook here for more photos and other updates!
